Why You Should Do an Engagement Session — Even If You're Eloping

If you're planning to elope, you're probably doing things a little differently — and I love that. Whether you’re hiking up a trail, exchanging vows by a quiet lake, or gathering your closest people for an intimate ceremony, your day is going to reflect you.

But here’s something many couples overlook in the elopement planning process: the engagement session. And honestly? I think it’s one of the most underrated parts of the whole experience.

Engagement Photos Are About More Than Save-the-Dates

Most people think engagement sessions are just for couples sending out formal invitations or throwing a big wedding. But engagement photos are about so much more than save-the-dates.

They're about slowing down. Celebrating the moment you're in. And creating space to connect as a couple before the big day — even if your "big day" is just the two of you on a mountaintop or a quiet ceremony in the woods.

One of the biggest benefits of doing an engagement session is that we get to know each other before your elopement day. You’ll learn how I guide and photograph you, and you’ll get comfortable being in front of the camera — which means your elopement photos will feel even more natural, effortless, and you.

It also gives us time to chat about your elopement plans, your vision, and what matters most to you. That connection makes your entire photo experience smoother and more personal.

You Get Photos That Feel Like You — Not Just the Dressed-Up Version

Elopement photos are usually full of stunning scenery, emotional vows, and all the magic of your big day — but you're also likely to be in formal clothes, caught up in the adrenaline and emotions of the moment.

An engagement session gives us the chance to photograph you in a more relaxed setting. No wedding dress, no pressure, no timeline to follow. Just the two of you being yourselves — laughing, hanging out, wearing clothes you actually live in.

Whether it’s hiking to a scenic overlook, wearing your fave outfits in a beautiful setting, setting up a campfire at your go-to spot, or just hanging out at home with your dog — your engagement session can reflect your version of love.

I don’t offer engagement sessions as a standalone service — they’re something I reserve exclusively for my past and current wedding and elopement clients. It’s my way of offering you a deeper experience and building that connection before your day.

Engagement photos give you the space to pause, soak it all in, and create something beautiful together — before the adventure of your elopement even begins.
